Beer maker Nile Breweries Limited (NBL) has expanded its tree planting initiative dubbed "The Green Towns Project" to Mbarara town in western Uganda, a company statement said today.
On October 30, 2010, officials from Uganda's leading brewer planted over 200 trees along Mbarara's main street and in the suburbs, joined by the town's municipal authorities and a contingent of soldiers from the Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) 2nd Division.
"We believe in ensuring a clean, green and safe environment in communities where we operate, "Mr. Onapito Ekomoloit, the Corporate Affairs Director for Nile Breweries said at the tree planting ceremony.
Mbarara was the fourth major Ugandan town to benefit from the "Green Towns Project," following earlier tree planting by Nile Breweries in Arua, Gulu and Hoima.
Mbarara Mayor Mr. Wilson Tumwine applauded Nile Breweries' green campaign, saying it was in line with the town's environmental plan.
"These trees will help us in reducing the carbon emissions that are generated by human activity," said Mayor Tumwine, speaking at the Kenkombe garbage dumping recycling site, one of the areas planted with trees.
Nile Breweries is a subsidiary of SABMiller plc, the world's second largest brewer, whose top ten sustainable development priorities include reducing the company's carbon and energy footprint.
In Uganda Nile Breweries is meeting this commitment through installation of state-of-the- art
Energy-saving technology at the brewery in Jinja and wide-ranging tree planting initiatives in the supply chain.
"In addition to the ‘Green Towns Project,' we have supplied over 6,000 tree seedlings to our sorghum farmers to promote water and soil conservation on their farms, through agro-forestry" Onapito said.
