In early July SABMiller RUS produced its first can with a health warning pointing out the potential harms of excessive beer consumption.
Russian legislation requires alcohol producers to place health warnings of the potential harms of excessive beer abuse on all advertisements. Large brewing companies voluntarily decided to place the same warning on product packaging.
The first SABMiller RUS product with the heath warning on its packaging is the Tri Bogatyrya Svetloe brand in the can. The warning takes up 10% of the packaging surface and is printed in a large font with a contrasting background. By the end of 2010 new standards of packaging with health warnings will be adopted for nearly all brands. There are 18 brands in SABMiller RUS's portfolio, among them Zolotatya Bochka, Pilsner Urquell, Grolsch, Miller, Redd's, Peroni Nastro Azzuro, Holsten, Velkopopovicky Kozel, and Try Bogatyrya.
"Alcohol responsibility is one of the ten sustainable development priorities," says Kirill Bolmatov, Government Affairs Director of SABMiller RUS. "Beer should bring enjoyment to those who choose it, but not create problems for them and those who are around them, and we try to remind people to be responsible as frequently as possible."
The main task of this initiative is the reduction of irresponsible consumption. Proactive work in this area started in 2006, when the 18+ sign was developed and was placed in retail outlets to inform consumers and vendors about the ban on the sale of beer to underage consumers. In 2009-2010 this work was continued with the "Already 18? Prove it!" campaign, which included raids to check how much the federal law prohibiting the sale of beer to those who are underage was being followed. SABMiller RUS was one of the most proactive players in this area of work at all stages and is the only company that has placed the 18+ sign on all its brands' packaging since 2007.
