Lima, May 25th, 2010 - The South Africa Embassy in Peru, Unión de Cervecerías Peruanas Backus y Johnston and San Isidro municipality inaugurated a monument to Nelson Mandela, the Nobel Peace Prize winner and the first African American president in the history of South Africa.
It should be noted that, in spite of the suffering of being in prison for 30 years, Mandela was an example of humility and a symbol of forgiveness. He was able to convey his message of peace to his people and to the world, demonstrating his excellent gift of conciliation.
In this election year, it is particularly important to highlight the democratic and civic values this international personality was able to express throughout his life.
South African Ambassador in Peru, Leslie Manley, reminded us that with his special charisma, peaceful struggle, rejection of radical measures and sense of responsibility, Nelson Mandela set the political and economic cornerstones of the new South Africa, and also helped to solve some of the conflicts in the continent.
"For Backus, participating in the inauguration of this work means acknowledging the valuable work of this peace leader who sought equality and respect among humans, an attitude that should be imitated by the current leaders of the world," said Rob Priday, President of Unión de Cervecerías Peruanas Backus y Johnston.
This way, Backus reaffirms its commitment to universal values such as freedom, democracy, equality and non-discrimination, all this within the framework of the celebration of its 130 years of creation.
San Isidro Mayor, Antonio Meier, said that "for the District of San Isidro, it is an honor to have the monument of one of the most emblematic figures of all time, whose life and work are inspirational."
The tribute to Nelson Mandela is located in Plaza Andrés A. Cáceres in the heart of San Isidro and was made by Humberto Hoyos Guevara, a Peruvian sculptor born in the city of Cajamarca, whose work is characterized by a great command and skill in bronze modeling.
