"For What It's Worth!" and SAM Hyperion appreciated (Translation)

4 May 2010

Two practices of Kompania Piwowarska have been appreciated in the project "Promoting Social Responsibility Standards in Companies," coordinated by the Polish Confederation of Private Employers (PKPP) Lewiatan, National Committee NSZZ Solidarność, and a consulting company, Deloitte.  Over 90 practices entered the contest.

"What does this contest represent? We believe the leaders in Polish business understand that social responsibility must have strategic dimension, otherwise it will not bring expected results. It means that the strategic approach to CSR is not utopia, but a road to be followed by all Polish companies," said Henryka Bochniarz, President of PKPP Lewiatan.

Polish economic leaders participated in the contest. Twenty companies received over 20 points out of 23. Two practices of Kompania Piwowarska-SAM Hyperion and social initiative "For What It's Worth!"- were appreciated as model examples among over 90 practices from all over the country.

SAM Hyperion
A system for managing and monitoring areas of sustainable development, SAM Hyperion has been appreciated not only in this contest, but also in the 2009 Responsible Business Forum Report and at the first stage of the 2009 Globe Award Poland contest in the sustainable development innovation category. SAM Hyperion semi-annually monitors the performance of Kompania Piwowarska and other SABMiller subsidiaries. Special attention is given to progress in the so-called "steps" with respect to each priority.

"Each step consists of four increasing performance levels based on internal and external standards irrespective of legal requirements. Level 1 refers to the minimum standard, while level 4 refers to the best practice. Monitoring areas of sustainable development allows progress and provides a benchmark, but also provides a chance to exchange good practices or effective solutions to manufacturing, social or environmental problems on an international level," said Małgorzata Walędzińska. CSR Manager at Kompania Piwowarska.

SAM Hyperion was presented at a conference as a best practice model for corporate order.

"For What It's Worth!"
Social initiative "For What It's Worth!" has been created to support those who need help the most, those who are either excluded from society or on the verge of exclusion. The main element of the program is a contest for public organization projects committed to support people excluded from society because of poverty. Some initiatives receive as much as 90% of funds.

"Up till now we have donated 5 million zlotys. What's more important is the fact that actions we supported have provided help to about 11,400 people," said Małgorzata Walędzińska.

Methodology of Good Practices Self-Evaluation CSR
The goal of the project "Promoting Standards of Social Responsibility in Companies" is to actively influence the development of CSR in Poland. During the good-practice conference, one of the two tools aiming to help companies in business approach CSR was presented. "Methodology of Good Practices Self-Evaluation CSR" was created after a thorough analysis of 94 practices sent by Polish companies declaring social responsibility. Their task was to complete a special questionnaire that focused not on what the companies do, but how they do it. The organizers wanted to establish if the operations are in accordance with business criteria and connected to each company strategy.
