Backus creates environmentally friendly publicity material (Translation)

30 April 2010

Promoting sustainable development

- Publicity material will be created using bagasse paper
- It will carry a characteristic mark that will identify it as environmentally friendly

Lima, April 28, 2010.- As part of its commitment to sustainable development, Backus has recently announced a major change in the material used in the manufacture of its printed publicity. As of today, posters, flyers and leaflets from different brands of its portfolio will be produced using sugar cane paper.

By using this material for its printed advertisements, Backus will no longer consume paper produced from trees, thus reducing its environmental impact and contributing to the conservation of forests. Please note that this paper is a sugar cane byproduct, 50% of which is wood fibers that enable paper production and is 100% biodegradable.

Posters, flyers and leaflets produced with this type of paper will carry a characteristic mark that will identify them as environmentally friendly. The mark will include the following message: More trees for the future! Paper made from bagasse.

Backus Trade Marketing Director, Mr. Eduardo Carrillo, stressed: "We are confident that this change in the production of our brand advertising material is good."

He also mentioned that, as part of the environmental policies they are implementing, publicity material will be UV-varnish free, which is a widely used method that generates a greater impact on the environment. It is important to note that the publicity material will be replaced frequently at the points of sale as new campaigns and/or promotions develop.

It is worth mentioning that Backus has been using this type of paper for internal use since the end of last year. To date, it is already being used 100% at the Lima and Pucallpa plants. The rest of Backus plants will implement paper usage as their current paper inventory depletes.

It is estimated that by changing to this type of paper, both for its internal use as well as for publicity purposes, Backus will save 4,150 trees a year, thus contributing to the reduction in the environmental impact.
