SABMiller, one of the biggest beer producers in the world, has created a unique program to measure the effects of responsible business. The system bears the name of SAM Hyperion and it measures and compares the results of breweries from over 60 countries, including the Polish winner in the Ranking of Responsible Companies in 2009 - Kompania Piwowarskia.
The title of the most socially responsible company in Poland* constitutes an obligation. Therefore, Kompania Piwowarska has for a few years scrupulously and meticulously measured its own progress in business responsibility. It is made possible by a special matrix of evaluating designated areas, SAM Hyperion, which allows KP to do effective measurements and monitor the results within the sphere of sustainable development, as well as to compare the results of its responsibility with other breweries from all over the world. SAM is a custom-made management system with an in-depth analysis of the results.

Running a business in a responsible way is a coherent concept of management realized by all employees of the company. Monitoring the results of responsible business
The effects within the sphere of sustainable development are perfectly measurable. Every company may designate a few areas like management, client, business partners', and employer's relations, ecological responsibility or social investments. Kompania Piwowarska does such evaluations every half a year through a special program for management and social reporting - Sustainability Assessment Matrix - SAM Hyperion. The program monitors the results of Kompania Piwowarska and other breweries composing SABMiller. In particular, it observes progress in so-called "stages" towards every priority.
"Every stage consists of four consecutive levels of results, based on internal and external standards, regardless of any legal requirements. Level 1 defines minimal standard and level 4 the best practice," explains Małgorzata Walędzińska
Evaluation matrix allows, among others, to customize priorities and to introduce updates depending on the local requirements. The guidelines in separate areas of SAM Hyperion are practically identical with the world guidelines of GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) and, in addition, they are also customized to serve the needs of a given business activity.
The results are published in local CSR (corporate social responsibility) reports on Raport Odpowiedzialność Społeczna KP as well as in global SABMiller reports on sustainable development.
Areas of sustainable development which are subject to periodical evaluation and monitoring are identical for all 30 breweries located in different parts of the world. Owing to proper investment and monitoring of the results, it is possible to observe progress made in separate countries or even continental trends.
"Monitoring of sustainable development areas allows not only for development and setting benchmarks, but also exchange of so-called good practices or effective methods of solving problems on the supranational level, for example production-related, social, environmental ones," comments Małgorzata Walędzińska
The system of managing and monitoring the areas of sustainable development, SAM Hyperion, won a prize in the first stage of Globe Award Poland 2009 in the category of innovations of sustainable development.
Responsible business pays
Investors do pay attention to companies that show particularly high care of business responsibility. Indices of socially responsible companies created by global stock exchanges keep growing in importance, such as FTSE KLD 400 Social Index, Dow Jones Sustainability Index, or the recently established Polish index RESPECT Index. CSR indices represent a concrete value calculated on the basis of evaluation of shares of companies with high standards of social responsibility. Unlike in the case of traditional indices, S&P500, CAC40 or WIG20, CSR indices include carefully selected companies that achieved best results in the areas of social relations, environment protection and/or governance.
"The world seems to have embraced the concept of SRI (Socially Responsible Investing) which promotes individual or institutional investing for example into shares of companies of high CSR standards or into ethical or green investment funds. Traditional analytical methods based strictly on financial indicators are complemented by responsible investors with indicators concerning society, environment and corporate governance. Such an integrated analysis is perceived as a more effective risk management and it allows for early identifying of new and attractive investment areas. In addition, it increases social and ethical value of the portfolio of retirement or investment funds by making them more attractive particularly to individuals. Hence it is important for the companies to diligently report their achievements in CSR, particularly by reporting the effects of their activities in a measurable, coherent and transparent way," states Izabela Kwiatkowska, Editor-in-Chief of the odpowiedzialne-inwestowanie.pl portal.

Kompania Piwowarska is the biggest brewing enterprise in Poland.
