Bavaria distributes 1,060 water eco-filters in the region of La Mojana
6 November 2009
Bogota, November 4th, 2009. On 28th and 29th October, Bavaria S. A., the leading beverages company in Colombia, distributed 1,060 water eco-filters and 1,060 reservoir tanks, which will benefit approximately 5,300 people in the region of La Mojana, This investment amounts to 97 million pesos.
These are low-cost filters, with a porous clay and colloidal silver base, which, with correct handling, allow the generation of at least 20 litres of safe and guaranteed drinking water per day, based on water available in wells, ponds, rivers, cisterns, lagoons, aqueducts and other water sources containing below standard drinking water. Each filter has a treated clay vase for filtering, a plastic container with a corresponding box, a plastic faucet and an instruction booklet. These eco-filters purify water and prevent serious gastrointestinal diseases.
This donation is framed within the backdrop of the sustainable intervention which Bavaria wants to achieve in areas where disasters have taken place in the country. On previous occasions in 2008 and 2009, the company, with the support of the Risk Management Direction of the Ministry of Interior, has already donated 2,260 eco-filters, benefiting over 11,000 people.
The decision to make this donation in the region of La Mojana, is based on the fact that it has a high rate of damage during disasters. This eco-region covers almost 500,000 hectares and is made up of four departments and eleven municipalities: Nechí (Antioquia); Magangué, San Jacinto del Cauca y Achí (Bolívar); Ayapel (Córdoba) y Guaranda, San Marcos, Majagual, Sucre, Caimito y San Benito Abad (Sucre). However, the area of influence of the eco-region also comprises the San Jorge river basin, the lower part of the Cauca river basin and the flood plain of these rivers, which runs through the 28 municipalities.
All of the advice in the design, technology and delivery of these eco-filters comes from Oxfam, who have been working hand in hand with local producers and Bavaria.
The official delivery ceremony was held last Wednesday in the municipality of San Marcos (Sucre) in the presence of its mayor and representatives from Bavaria, the regional management of the Red Cross, and the Risk Management Direction for the Prevention and Assistance for Disasters.
