26 March 2009

San Salvador, March 24, 2009.- Industrias La Constancia (ILC) was awarded the Regional Cleaner Production Award for its brewing process, and received an honorable mention in the water category. The award was given by the Comisión Centroamericana de Ambiente y Desarrollo (Central American Environment and Development Committee) (CCAD).  It recognizes the company for its 62% reduction of water use, its 58% decrease of solid waste in the last eight years, and for increasing recycling of post-production factory materials by 67% in the last year.

"We are very satisfied that our commitment to sustainable development has been recognized with the first place award for cleaner production in the materials category.   Many leading companies, including regional breweries and bottling plants, participate in this competition. The award places El Salvador as a leader in environmental management, both regionally and internationally," said Rolando Caro, ILC vice-president of manufacturing.

Martin van Dam, president of Industrias La Constancia, pointed out that "Industrias La Constancia is, and will continue to be, a company committed to the changes that our world demands. Our policy of sustainable development mandates that we continuously improve our production processes to protect our environment.  Thanks to this policy, we are helping our employees, clients, suppliers and communities to enjoy today a lifestyle that does not threaten the resources of future generations."

As part of the sustainable development principles guiding the company, various activities are performed with the goal of reducing water, energy and carbon usage, and increasing efficiency in all plants. These efforts of continuous improvement led ILC to participate in the fourth edition of the Regional Cleaner Production Award. The CCAD is the environmental agency of the Central American Integration System (CAIS), and gives this award as major recognition for cleaner production in the region (Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and Dominican Republic).  The award is provided with the sponsorship of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Energy and Environment Development Partnership with Central America (financed by the cooperation of Finland and Austria), and the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA).

The 49 participating companies were evaluated by a qualified jury, which not only studied the 41 projects submitted in the competition, but also made site visits to verify the environmental policies and contribution of the companies.  Industrias La Constancia won with its project of cleaner production in brewing processes.   ILC also obtained an honorable mention for Sustainable Management of Water Resources, the company's project which optimizes water use in production and reduces organic polluting waste in the water used.

The award given to Industrias La Constancia is a clear recognition for the company's achievements in cleaner production, including:

  • Reduction of water use by 62%
  • Creation of waste reduction and recycling programs
  • Installation of a recycling center in the brewing plant
  • Improvement in the cost of recycling plastic films and cardboard by more than 300%
  • Reduction by 58% of solid waste sent to landfills

• 67.78% increase in recycling of post-production factory materials in the last year.

ILC is a world-class company that has established ten priorities of sustainable development:

1. Promoting responsible consumption
2. Optimizing water use
3. Reducing energy use and carbon footprint
4. Having a strong practice of packaging reuse and recycling
5. Working to achieve non-waste operations
6. Having a network of suppliers that reflects the company's values and commitment to sustainable development
7. Respecting human rights
8. Bringing benefits to the communities it works for

10. Being open and transparent when reporting progress in its own defined priorities of sustainable development.

To comply with these priorities, ILC develops various programs, whose performance is measured by parameters and evaluation tools contained in current local legislation.
