- This is an alliance between the Mario Santo Domingo foundation and Operación Sonrisa.
- Bavaria donated $50 million to benefit 90 children and young adolescents between 3 months and 18 years of age, affected by harelip and cleft palate.
Bogotá, March 3, 2009. Bavaria, S. A., the leading beverage company in Colombia, announced that the "Sonrisas de Vida" event will take place from February 28 to March 7 in various hospitals of Cartagena and Barranquilla, which will benefit 90 children and young adolescents between 3 months and 18 years of age, who will be subjected to reconstruction surgery to correct harelip and cleft palate pathologies, as part of the alliance between the Mario Santo Domingo and Operación Sonrisa Foundations - the latter is the entity that conducts the surgeries.
This is an initiative that thanks to the synergies between the foundations, promotes for the beneficiaries and their families an opportunity of life, which will allow them to be considered by the society under conditions of equity. These are 90 persons identified within a high risk social group, who are surrounded by poverty and major obstacles to gain access to a comprehensive medical care to ensure their rehabilitation.
This is how the physicians from Operation Smile International, volunteers from Operación Sonrisa Colombia and certain local collaborators will be responsible to successfully implement this initiative to give these boys and girls back their smile.
Within its social investment programs, Bavaria contributes once again to improving the quality of life of the communities that most need it.
This is the opportunity to extend our gratitude to Fundación Operación Sonrisa, responsible for the "Sonrisas de Vida" project, and the entity that approached us to make this dream come true for 90 families in Barranquilla and Cartagena.
The press release carried out today at Hospital Universitario del Caribe was held in the presence of Pablo Obregón from Fundación Mario Santo Domingo; Álvaro Rodríguez, director of Maltería Tropical in Cartagena and Bavaria's representative; Agler Hellen, director of Operation Smile in the Caribbean and Central America region; Margarita Giraldo, Colombian director of Operación Sonrisa; and Felipe Encinales from Interlink, among other participants.
