Nile Breweries Named Best Corporate Citizen

20 January 2009

Nile Breweries Limited (NBL) is Uganda's best company in implementing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes.
The award was conferred on the brewery during The Investor of the Year Award 2008, an annual competition organised by Uganda Investment Authority (UIA).
Corporate Social Responsibility was the theme of the 2008 awards, which took place on Friday, January 16, 2009, at Hotel Africana in Kampala.
Nile Breweries scooped the award of Best Corporate Citizen-Corporate Social Responsibility.
"Nile Breweries programmes have been exceptional in empowering communities within which they operate," said the award judge's citation.
"We have earned it," the NBL Managing Director, Nick Jenkinson, said.
"We are delighted and grateful that our humble efforts have been recognised," said NBL Corporate Affairs Director, Onapito-Ekomoloit, after receiving the award on behalf of his company.
The Jinja-based brewery was recognized for implementing excellent CSR programmes internally and externally.
Internally, the company has a strong sustainable development programme, which emphasizes water conservation, proper waste disposal, packaging recycling and re-use,  carbon reduction and energy saving.
In addition, Nile Breweries champions transparency in its operations-it is recorded by Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) as 4th largest tax payer for four years in a row-respect for human rights and care for the welfare of employees.
Uganda Federation of Employers voted NBL as The Employer of the Year in 2004 and 2005.
Externally, the company has implemented wide-ranging Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programmes, in different parts of Uganda, in health, education, and environmental protection.
"Our HIV/AIDS programme, for example, has covered the entire value chain-sorghum farmers, employees, beer truck drivers, bar workers and consumers," Onapito said.
Nile Breweries was recognized also for contributing to the socio-economic development of rural Uganda by providing guaranteed market and stable pricing to sorghum farmers. The company uses sorghum to makes it Eagle Lager and Eagle Extra brands, which are lowly priced and popular with rural consumers.
The Eagle Project, as the company calls it, has, at the same time, provided entrepreneurship and investment skills to the farmers.
In the environmental protection, Nile Breweries has an agro-forestation programme among sorghum farmers, and in July 2008 launched the "Green Towns Project" to plant trees on streets of major Ugandan towns.
Nile Breweries Limited is a subsidiary of SABMiller plc, the second largest brewer in the world and listed on both the London and Johannesburg stock exchanges.
