The Brewery in Velké Popovice has Reduced CO2 Emissions by 2000 Tons

The brewery of the Plzeňský Prazdroje group in Velké Popovice has completed installation of a system for recovery of fermentation CO2 from production, which will be reused in other phases of beer production Thus, this system is friendly towards the environment in two ways.

The introduction of recovery of fermentation CO2 from production was completed at the beginning of the summer, with an investment of 13.3 million crowns. The principle is simple: carbon dioxide is formed in the fermentation process in the production of beer and, until recently, has been discharged into the air. Simultaneously, it was necessary to purchase other carbon dioxide, produced from fossil sources, which was required in a further stage of beer production. It is ideal to use the fermentation CO2 and save fossil sources. This system is already functioning in the breweries in Plzeň and Nošovice; however, the most modern and energy-saving system on the market has currently been brought into operation in Popovice. Now the Velké Popovice brewery is also capable of recovering fermentation CO2 and reusing it for its requirements in the bottle-filling lines and in beer production.

“Thus, we are friendly to the environment in two ways – in just the first year of operation of the equipment, it will not be necessary to produce 2000 tons of carbon dioxide from fossil sources and, in addition, this amount will not end up in the atmosphere as a waste product from the brewery”, said the manager of the Velké Popovice brewery, Pavel Šemík.

In the 2005 – 2007 period, Plzeňský Prazdroj reduced the volume of actual CO2 emissions by 55 thousand
tons. Simultaneously, it prefers natural gas as a heating medium, releasing the smallest amount of CO2 of all fuels and, in addition, also burns environmentally friendly bio-fuels in all its operations. As a consequence, in the Plzeňský Prazdroj breweries, one ton of carbon dioxide produced corresponds to the production of 25.5 thousand beers; this is the best figure for all the European breweries of the SABMiller group.

Together with care for water sources, treatment of industrial waters, recycling and energy savings, minimizing of CO2 emissions in Plzeňský Prazdroj is an integral part of projects of social responsibility and the strategy of sustainable development.
