Accra Brewery Picks Award For Best Practices In Sustainable Manufacturing

Accra, Ghana. 3rd December, 2013: Accra Brewery Limited (ABL) has received an award for ‘Best Practices In Sustainable Manufacturing’ at the recently held 2nd AGI industry awards in Accra.
This year, the ceremony, which is organised to honour Ghanaian industries, was themed ‘Rewarding Excellence and Innovation’, and saw ABL clinching an award for the second consecutive year after receiving the award for ‘Best Company Employer’ in 2012.
For 83 years, Accra Brewery has been operating in Ghana, and the company has shown its commitment to the best practices in its manufacturing processes by placing emphases on promoting responsible drinking, conserving water, reducing energy use and carbon footprints, recycling packaging materials, reducing waste and encouraging enterprise development and value chain management, as well as enhancing the lives of the communities they operate within. ABL has also been promoting human rights, good health and has contributed substantially to reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS.
Accra Brewery Limited has been embarking on numerous sustainable development initiatives within the company and in communities. The brewery’s energy consumption has dropped from 250MJ/hl to 205MJ/hl and over the past three years reduced its water use from 10.34hl/hl ration to 4.79hl/hl; the company also crushes its old bottles and recycles them into new glass, and its retailers have also benefited from responsible alcohol retailing programmes. Additionally, ABL’s consistent initiatives in health, education and socio-economic activities have improved the lives of the communities in which they operate.
Ms. Adjoba Kyiamah, Director of Corporate and Legal Affairs of ABL, who received the award on behalf of the company, was delighted that ABL’s efforts have been recognised. “We are encouraged by this award to spur on to greater heights. ABL will continue to remain committed to its sustainable way of doing business in Ghana. I dedicate this award to all employees and management of ABL who have been working hard for us to stay on course.”
In November, ABL commenced a multi-million dollar expansion project to increase its capacity and also increase its efforts in engaging in sustainable manufacturing practices. The project factors in the protection of the environment as all emissions and effluent product disposal systems, and a waste water treatment plant fitted with a yeast digester will be constructed.
