Kr100, 000 Widows Training Centre Officially Commissioned

20 June 2013

LIVINGSTONE, JUNE 20th, 2013: Heinrich's Beverages, a subsidiary of SABMiller Group of companies has officially commissioned and handed over the Kr100, 000 worth training centre to the Livingstone Widows Training Centre.

Southern Province Minister, Mr Daniel Munkombwe said he was excited at the prospect of more people being empowered by what had initially started off as a pet project.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister, Livingstone District Commissioner, Mr Omar Munsanje said his government was a supporter of Public Private Partnerships and this project was an example of such a one with which is meant to improve the lives of the vulnerable groups of our society.

"It is not every day that private companies will spend such a colossal amount of money to build infrastructure that they themselves will not use and so the PF government is happy with this turn of events." Mr Munkombwe said in the speech read on his behalf by Mr Munsanje.

Adding: "Today we congratulate Heinrich's Beverages for recognizing the talent these widows have by making artifacts from used Maheu bottles which effectively removes them from the streets where they can be a nuisance to both society and the environment."

Heinrich's Beverages General Manager, Mr Ronny Palale said his company sought to partner with private and public sector entities in many areas with the aim of adopting a holistic approach to sustainable packaging management.

"In particular, consideration is being taken for packaging routes such as encouraging new low carbon materials and also considering new biodegradable or lower impact options for each aspect of the company's packaging." Mr Palale said.

Adding: "Therefore partnering with the Widows Association of Livingstone is a great advantage for us as this not only takes care of the environment when our product containers are used but it has also created jobs and a sustainable life for many women and youths who would otherwise not be doing anything. Our belief is that partnerships are cardinal in achieving societal goals, and it is gratifying that in this particular project, we are not only partnered with the NGO, but have been working closely with the municipality, the Livingstone City Council and the Zambia Development Agency who brought the project to us two years ago for consideration."
