«Miller Brands Ukraine», WWF and GIZ review the first stage of the «Water Futures Partnership» project (Translation)

14 December 2011

The first stage of the international program «Water Futures Partnership», joint project of SABMiller, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and German society of international collaboration (GIZ), has ended in the Ukraine. The project included an extensive research of regional watershed divides and their management. The research allowed inventing the methods of saving and improving the water resources of Donetsk region.

«Water Futures Partnership» is a global project launched in 2009 by SABMiller in partnership with prominent international organizations WWF and GIZ. The goal of the project is to develop and implement effective methods of long-term preservation of the water balance, in collaboration with local communities in the SABMiller branch territories. The program is already being implemented in Peru, South Africa and Tanzania. Similar SABMiller partnership initiatives have also been launched in Columbia, India and the US.

In the Ukraine, «Water Futures Partnership» project was launched in 2010 and at present it is being implemented in Donetsk region facing the long-term water resources preservation problem. According to the project experts' opinion, the main water problems of the region are the old infrastructure, water loss in the Severski Donets-Donbass canal and considerable seasonal river level fluctuations. The biggest issue is the pollution of Seveski Donets and Calmius rivers receiving all the sewage disposal of Donbass and Kharkiv regions.

The project participants also developed and proposed several solutions that differ technically and by the investment amount. For example, one of the effective and cost-efficient methods is using phytotechnologies, i.e. biological methods of water purification. More specifically, so called "bio-plateaus" should be created, i.e. reservoirs where pollutants are absorbed by living organisms, from bacteria to higher plants. This method, that does not require expensive equipment, has already been successfully used in some countries.
