Monday, December 5th, 2011 - Last Friday, the Ministry of Work and Employment Promotion, within the framework of World Aids Day, awarded Backus for their commitment shown in the development of actions against HIV/AIDS in the work environment. The recognition was handed by Mr. Pablo Javier Checa Ledesma, Work and Employment Promotion Vice-Minister, who highlighted the participation of Backus, among other companies, for their initiatives in relation to public awareness and the prevention of this illness.
For her part, Michelle Salcedo, Backus Sustainable Development Manager, pointed out: "We want to reiterate our gratitude to the Ministry of Work and Employment Promotion for this recognition, and hope it is considered as an incentive to other companies in the country, to whom we invite to join the Peruvian Business Council in response to HIV/AIDS and implement actions of prevention in their work environment."
It is worth mentioning that Backus has, as one of its priorities of sustainable development, contributed to the reduction of the HIV/AIDS impact in its sphere of influence. For that, in recent years it has implemented actions at a national level which are focused in making their workers aware, such as meetings, workshops, and handing out informative materials with the purpose that they are shared with other people within their family and social environment. It has also updated its policy according to the new MINTRA regulations, displaying it in all its operations and ratifying its position against this illness.
On the other hand, every new brewery worker has the opportunity to attend a meeting about the prevention of HIV/AIDS as part of the induction process, where they are taught preventive measures as well as the importance of not discriminating people who live with the illness. Also, as part of the free annual medical check-up, every two years, all the staff can take the ELISA test, voluntarily and confidentially, with the aim of ruling out the virus.
The Union of Peruvian Breweries and Johnston is the industry leader in Peru, with 5 decentralised production plants in Lima, Arequipa, Cusco, Motupe and Pucallpa. It has a portfolio of well-segmented national and international brands that satisfies consumers in more than 150,000 selling points throughout the country. During 2010, Backus registered net sales of S/. 2,676.7 million, contributed to the Treasury with S/. 2,004 million, and directly gave jobs to more than 7000 people and indirectly to more than 220,000 people.
Backus works with a focus on sustainable development, with the goal of generating shared value with the people that are part of its value chain and the communities in which it operates. That is why all its initiatives and projects aim towards generating social inclusion and strategic alliances to favour those efforts and achieve a greater impact in economic, social and environmental terms for the society as a whole.
