Nile Breweries supports home testing for HIV (Translation)

Nile Breweries Limited, the Uganda beer market leader, has started a programme for awareness and testing for HIV/AIDS for couples in Katakwi district, as part of its Corporate Social Investment in Uganda, said the company report.

The company is working together the Health Initiatives in the Private Sector (HIPS), a USAID-funded NGO that specializes in HIV/AIDS programmes.

The Katakwi awareness programme, which kicked off on 7th May 2010, has already attracted the
participation of over 1,000 people, with 550 undergoing HIV voluntary counselling and testing (VCT).
"Nile Breweries is conducting this programme to protect the people in the communities where we work against the dangers of HIV/AIDS," said Onapito Ekomoloit, NBL Corporate Affairs Director.

Nile Breweries recognises the presence of HIV/AIDS in Uganda as a serious disease that cripples our health, social and economic wellbeing. The company has had along running programme to educate its stakeholders about HIV/AIDS and its effects.

Reducing the impact of HIV/AIDS is one of the Sustainable Development priorities of SABMiller, the parent company of Nile Breweries Limited.

Nile Breweries has conducted similar training programmes in other parts of Uganda to support national efforts in reducing the spread of the infection and minimize its impact. The company's HIV/AIDS programmes have so far benefited over 10,000 people across the company's supply in an initiative dubbed "From Grain to Glass."
