Nile Breweries Limited, Uganda's leading brewer, has sensitized beer sellers in Mbarara town to watch against alcohol abuse while serving consumers, a statement issued by the company said.
Company officials gave the advice while training beer sellers in Mbarara town about Nile Breweries principles and policies on responsible alcohol marketing and consumption, on May 13, 2010, at Westland Hotel, the statement said.
"We believe our beer adds enjoyments to the overwhelming majority of consumers, but it should be consumed responsibly," said Onapito-Ekomoloit, the company Corporate Affairs Director.
Participants, drawn from the key bars, hotels, lodges and restaurants in the Mbarara town, were specifically warned against selling beer to persons under the age of 18 years.
The beer sellers were advised also to help police enhance road safety by adhering to Nile Breweries policy of discouraging motorists from driving after drinking.
"Our company strongly discourages bars from serving intoxicated patrons and acts of binge drinking," William Kyambadde, the Nile Breweries Mbarara Sales Manager told the beer sellers.
Biingi Julius, the Nile Breweries District West Manager, said the training was important in imparting knowledge about Nile Breweries' alcohol principles and policies to beer sellers.
Nile Breweries has carried out two similar training workshops for alcohol retail outlets in Kampala.
The programme will cover all major trading towns in Ugandan.
Meanwhile, last year, the company worked with police to launch an outdoor campaign named "Live a 3D Life" for motorists, meaning "Don't Drink and Drive," carried on billboards in and around Kampala.
"Hundreds of Ugandans have died from consuming illicit and adulterated alcohol; it is our commitment to provide safe beer that is drank responsibly," Corporate Affairs Director, Onapito-Ekomoloit said.
